Do you recognize the desire to write but don’t know how to start? You have this blank page before you and feel you want to write about something. Your mind wanders and gets distracted?
Here are some tips that can help you feed this blank page in front of you and get your thoughts structured and excited for making those first steps toward the paper. So, whether it is a memorandum, blog, book, poem, or something else, here are some tips for moving the pencil.
1. Start and go. You may get distracted, watch your phone to check Instagram multiple times, and feel like you have to do something meaningful outside the writing. I’ve been there, and this is pretty normal to experience. It can feel scary to write and expose your thoughts. Will it be good enough? Will someone read it? Will I be judged and left out when opening up about what I have to say? It is up to you what you post and don’t post. You can adjust and rephrase later if you want.ย
2. Write all your ideas about what you like to write in bullet points. In this way, the fractured mind gets its first excitements out and might slowly go into flow state of writing.ย
3. When you feel scared of writing something on paper, the idea is to write all the thoughts that come to your mind. This will likely help when dealing with perfectionism. For example, “I don’t know what to write about; what I’m writing now is stupid. I feel blocked and maybe I can write something about a picture. What do I wanna write about on the picture? And so on…” Later on, you can delete or rephrase what you have written, but you have a start and get an idea about where the blog is going. In other words, the process is leading instead of the result.ย
4. Start with a topic and an intention. What subject do you like to write about, and what is your intention or purpose toward the reader? Do you want to inform them or feed their curiousity?
This will inspire you to take the first steps toward writing and moving forward from a block. Have you started some writing recently? I will be happy to hear about it!
Thank you for reading.
